Follow the Sun: International Yoga Day Around the World

International Yoga Day and the Summer Solstice invite us to pause, reconnect, and move with greater awareness. As the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, the solstice has long symbolized light, vitality, and transformation, a reminder of our connection to nature, rhythm, and the present moment.

This year, we’re honoring the journey of the sun through movement, breath, and practice across time zones. From sunrise in Thailand to midday in Spain and sunset in Nicaragua, three retreat centers from around the world share practices inspired by different moments of the day.

Follow the sun with us through energizing morning movement, uplifting midday flow, and grounding evening ritual, an invitation to reconnect to yourself wherever you are in the world.

Sunrise: Energizing Yoga Flow at Vikasa Retreat Center in Koh Samui, Thailand

As the sun rises over the ocean in Koh Samui, this energizing morning flow invites you to awaken the body and reconnect to your breath through movement.

Yoga teacher Victoria shares, "Yoga means union, a coming together of body, mind, and breath, and a deeper connection between the individual self and something greater. In yogic philosophy, this sense of union invites us to move beyond separation and remember our interconnectedness with ourselves, others, and the natural world.Through practice, this connection can be felt in simple moments: the rhythm of the breath, the grounding of the feet on the mat, or the feeling of moving in harmony with the rising sun. Yoga becomes less about achieving and more about listening, observing, and returning to presence."

Midday: Uplifting Yoga Flow at Suryalila Retreat Center in Andalusia, Spain

As the day reaches its peak, the midday in Spain becomes a time to embrace vitality, openness, and expansion.

Yoga teacher Lidiya shares, "In yogic tradition, the summer solstice marks a peak in light and energy, a time of expansion, clarity, and connection to nature and the self. Through yoga practice, we can honor this energy by moving with awareness, breathing with intention, and creating space for clarity and presence.Energizing and heart opening practices help awaken the body’s natural energy, while moments of stillness allow us to listen inward and reconnect with what truly matters. Off the mat, the solstice can be honored through simple rituals that bring us closer to the rhythms of nature: watching the sunrise or sunset, spending time outdoors, sharing nourishing meals, practicing gratitude, or gathering in community. It is a reminder that yoga is not only something we practice on the mat, but something we live, a way of moving through the world with more balance, connection, and openness. At Suryalila, they create space for deeper connection to nature, community, and ourselves. Held by open landscapes, quiet moments, and conscious practice, yoga becomes a way of experiencing life with more presence, balance, and openness."

Sunset: Grounding Yoga Flow at Akaru Residency in Poneloya, Nicaragua

As the sun begins to set in Nicaragua, the energy of the day softens. Evening practice becomes an opportunity to ground and return inward.

Yoga teacher Isabella shares, "During the summer season, simple grounding rituals can help create balance. These are my go to rituals for a grounded and balanced summer:

  • Receive the morning sun. I love stepping outside shortly after waking and letting the sunlight hit my skin and eyes. It helps regulate my rhythm for the day and immediately connects me to nature.
  • Hydrate before anything else. I usually start with water, fresh juice, or water with lime. Taking a few conscious breaths outdoors while listening to the birds and ocean sets a calm tone for the day.
  • Create a slow morning ritual. I genuinely enjoy waking up with the sun and giving myself space before rushing into anything. After hydrating and having coffee, I'll move my body in a way that feels aligned with how I'm feeling that day— whether that's yoga, Pilates, running, or simply walking. I usually finish with about 10 minutes of meditation.
  • Wind down with intention. During the week, I try to end my evenings simply: a cup of chamomile tea, a few pages of a good book, and writing in my gratitude journal. It's a gentle way to reflect on the day and transition into rest.
  • Prioritize weekly self-care. Sundays are sacred for me. I love taking a hot shower, massaging my body with coconut oil, putting on a bathrobe, and ending the evening with something lighthearted—often an episode of Seinfeld

Following the Sun, Returning to Ourselves

Whether you joined us for one practice or followed the sun from beginning to end, we hope these classes offered a moment to reconnect with your breath, your body, and the present moment.

On International Yoga Day and the Summer Solstice, we are reminded that yoga extends far beyond the mat. It lives in the rituals we return to, the communities we gather with, and the way we move through each day with greater awareness and intention.
